According to The Times, Liverpool are preparing a bid for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke but will only submit it after Aston Villa face Arsenal in the FA Cup final on Saturday. Liverpool trio Rickie Lambert, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini have failed to make an impact this season, while Daniel Sturridge has been injured for most parts of the season.
Reports also suggest Liverpool face a stiff competition from Manchester United who are also interested in bringing the Belgian international to Old Trafford. Liverpool believe an offer of more than £20 million will convince Villa to sell Benteke.
Benteke has scored 12 goals in his last 12 appearances, and Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood believes he can convince Benteke to stay at Villa Park if they can win the FA Cup final against Arsenal on Saturday.
“Christian is only a young man but he’s very mature in the way he behaves,” Sherwood said. “I think he’s handled the situation well. I have no reason to believe he wants to seek employment elsewhere. He seems to be very happy here. He knows there are big games coming up and I think he wants to be at this football club.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool are preparing for a major squad overhaul, and a few players are expected to leave the Merseyside outfit in the summer. Fabio Borini and Jose Enrique have been told they are deemed surplus to requirements, while there are also doubts regarding the future of Lazar Markovic.
