Liverpool are interested to sign Spurs target Jordan Veretout, according to Express and L’Equipe.

Spurs made a bid for the Nantes midfielder which was believed to be worth of £10.6 million but L’Equipe claims that talks between the London side and the player have broken down and Liverpool are now front-runners for the French midfielder.

With a major summer overhaul at Anfield, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers wants to sign the French box to box midfielder to bolster his squad even more.

The 22 year old had a brilliant campaign for the Ligue 1 oufit where he scored 7 goals and assisted 6 times.

Veretout also has good defensive duty with 1.9 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game as par Whoscored.

Liverpool have made 7 major signings in the summer so far with James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez, Robert Firmino, Nathaniel Clyne and Christian Benteke.

They are looking to strengthen their midfield after the departure of Stevn Gerrard and Veretout has been identified as a perfect player to improve the position.

Veretout has is capped 44 times for different youth set ups of France and also won FIFA under 20 World Cup in 2013 for them.

While highly sought-after, his agent is reported to have said he is not keen on a move to Spurs and would prefer a switch to Anfield.

Liverpool have a crowded midfield with Henderson, Milner, Can, Lucas and Allen contesting for the central midfield positions and Veretout will have to challenge hard for a starting place for Rodgers’ Liverpool team if he arrives at Anfield.

Spurs meanwhile have seen central midfielders like Paulinho, Benjamin Stambouli and Etienne Capoue leave White Hart Lane this summer and needed a central midfielder badly.

Spurs are likely to set their sights on other alternatives to the French and Sven Bender of Dortmund and Christoph Krammer of Leverkusen are the reported target of Mauricio Pochettino now.
