Gaitan signs for Atletico Madrid

Nicolas Gaitan has been on Manchester United’s radar since Sir Alex Ferguson was managing the Old Trafford giants. Even Chelsea tried to lure the player from Benfica but failed.

It seems that the 28-year-old Argentina winger is destined not to make it to Old Trafford.

There were once again links with United this summer but Gaitan’s big move from Benfica has finally been confirmed – and it is to Madrid, not Manchester.

Gaitan has signed for Atletico , managed by fellow Argentine Diego Simeone, for £21million.

Coming from the Portuguese league where the pace of the game is slower, Gaitan is aware of Simeone’s demands on his players to put in the extra yard on the pitch, and is prepared to give his all to the club.

Gaitan will have the chance to make his long-awaited La Liga debut on Aug. 22 when Atletico play hosts to newly promoted Alaves.

Gaitan, 27, has been in Portugal since 2010 having joined Benfica from Boca Juniors, where he made 66 appearances in two years, scoring 12 goals.

At the Estadio da Luz, he has played 127 times netting 21 times though despite being a full Argentina international for six years, he only has nine caps and two goals for his country.

Gaitan’s technique, dynamism, and knack for quick transitions between midfield and attack make him the ideal player for a team that was heavily criticised for slow, purposeless build-up play at times this season.
Despite his impressive reputation as one of the most effective creative midfielders in Europe, last season he was also only able to lay on 10 chances for his team-mates, but that was still more than any of his team-mates.
