Ahead of the club’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers clash against Club Brugge, Van Gaal addressed the media, where hed said: “He can play as a No.9 and a No.10, and he can also play as a No.6 and No.8. This year he will play more as a No.9 and No.10 rather than 6 and 8 because there we have other players.”

Marouane Fellaini played his first game for Manchester United this season last week in the first leg match with club Brugge. He came as a replacement in the second half and had scored the winning goal.

When the Belgian was asked if he was comfortable playing as a striker he opined: “In the past I have played No.9 and No.10. I have to help the team. I can play there. It’s not important where I play, the most important thing is to win the game. Of course it’s different but I enjoy all the positions I can play in.

“Everyone knows my first season was difficult but it’s in the past and now I look forward.

“Last year I did quite well and I want to continue like that so I just look forward to doing well and scoring some goals.”

Marouane Fellaini had played as a number 10 last season under Louis van Gaal. He was used as target man upfront and his height was used to reach the long balls.
