Former Liverpool man Luis Garcia believes Atletico de Kolkata deserve to be in the finals of the inaugural season of the Indian Super League. Atletico de Kolkata will be up against Kerala Blasters at D.Y Patil Stadium in Mumbai as both sides look to lift the maiden Indian Super League trophy.
Atletico de Kolkata beat FC Goa on penalties in the second leg to reach he finals, while Kerala Blasters won 4-3 on aggregate against tournament favourites Chennaiyin FC. Luis Garcia has been key to Atletico de Kolkata’s success till now and the Kolkata outfit heavily rely on their skipper to produce goal scoring chances. Garcia has played a leader’s role for his side and has been seen playing a part in almost every attack that comes from Atletico de Kolkata.
Speaking to the media ahead of the final, Luis Garcia, Champions League winner with Liverpool, believes his side have done enough to be in the finals after staying at the top of the table for the first ten games.
“We have been in the first position for 10 games,” Luis Garcia said.
“It’s true that we were struggling in the middle of the competition but after that, I think we didn’t have to show anyone that we are the one of toughest teams in the competition.
“We showed that it’s very hard to beat us and that we are a very good team. That’s why we deserved to be in the finals.”
Luis Garcia was substituted after the first half in the second leg of the semi-finals against FC Goa due to hamstring tightness and he is now hoping to be fit for the final against Kerala Blasters.
“We need players who are at 100 per cent on the pitch and I definitely wasn’t after that,” he added.
“Besides, now there’s a big game in a couple days and I intend to be fit for that one.”
