Luis Suarez misses Ballon d’Or nomination

Shashi / 03 November 2014

Luis Suarez, Uruguay nation team striker showed an excellent performance last year in English premier league and led Liverpool to The Champions League last term with his goals, but it seems like it was not enough performance to make the 23-man shortlist for FIFA Ballon d’Or, the most prestigious award for any footballer and a symbol of being the greatest player in the world.

Barcelona forward Luis Suarez has missed out on a nomination for the Fifa Ballon d’Or 2014 despite his excellent season for Liverpool last year. The Uruguay international fired Liverpool to third place in the Premier League with his 31 goals in 2013/14 – and thus securing Champions League football – while winning the European Golden Shoe and Premier League top scorer awards in the process.

In FIFA world he got caught up in a “Bite incident” in a match and suffered a Ban of few days for the action. Fifa has opted to leave Suarez off their 23-man shortlist after he missed four months of action due to his ban for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup in Brazil. Another notable name which is also missing from Ballon d’Or shortlist is Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery, who came in third in last year’s vote. Other notable absentees are Robert Lewandowski, Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal and fellow Serie A star Miralem Pjanic, as well as Real Madrid’s Luka Modric.

Barcelona’s lack of silverware this year means regulars such as Dani Alves, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Xavi have not made the list either.

It is also surprising that some very renowned and accomplished Premier League players also have been overlooked, they are Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Sergio Aguero (showed excellent performance in premier league last year), Aaron Ramsey (also played very well) and Nemanja Matic all missing out.
