Manchester United have now emerged as the firm favourites to sign Argentine defender Ezequiel Garay despite interest from Arsenal and Inter Milan, reports The Sun.
Mourinho have already snapped up £30million Eric Bailly this summer but the Portuguese is said to be considering another defender swoop.
And Garay could be Old Trafford-bound with Arsenal and Inter also in the race. United hierarchy believes he could be available for around £15m.
Reports in Italy, from Tuttosport, claimed all three clubs were considering moves for the 29-year-old this summer.
But bookmaker Betstars have prices United at 15/8 to sign the Zenit St Petersburg man.
He’s 9/4 to join Arsenal, 5/2 to stay put and 7/2 to join Serie A side, Inter Milan.
Garay joined Zenit from Benfica in 2014 having also played for Real Madrid between 2008-11.
According to some other reports, Inter have earmarked Garay as a strong replacement for Jeison Murillo, who could leave in a big-money this summer.
The centre-back has been impressing in Russia since moving there from Benfica. The Argentina international has made 70 appearances in two seasons to become a regular of the Zenit team.
Garay’s positioning and reading of the game is second to none. His heading is also exceptional when it comes to defending or attacking set pieces.
Mourinho is also rumoured to be interested in Southampton’s Jose Fonte.
He recently won Euro 2016 under Fernanda Santos, could be the cheapest option of the three and, at 32, has four years’ experience in the Premier League. Fonte’s contract expires in 2018.
United are continuing their summer recruitment drive under new boss Mourinho having already signed Bailly.
Mourinho is also keen on a midfielder – with his sights on Borussia Dortmund star Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
United have handed the Portuguese a £200m budget to take them back to the top and a move for Garay would cost in the region of £15m.
