Young (3): Started at right-back for the home team and was solid in defense. Made a blatant dive near end trying to win a penalty

Smalling (3): Put his body in the way to block a goal-bound shot with the score at 0-0. Otherwise was largely untested.

Blind (3): Produced a fine long ball to Martial early on. Solid defensively on his return.

Rojo (2.5): Sent a volleyed effort wide just after half-hour mark which was almost the only real contribution up front in the final third.

Schweinsteiger (3.5): Controlled the whole tempo of the game in his style as he converted defense into attack with ease at times.

Carrick (4): A man of the match performance from the veteran midfielder who was immaculate in his passing and composure in possession.

Lingard (3): An assured performance in the mid-field and also provided the assist for Rooney’s goal.

Mata (2.5): Was not really effective for most parts of the game but linked up well with his teammates in the mid-field.

Martial (3): Restored to striker role but little went his way. Subbed with 25 minutes left.

Rooney (3): Ended his long goal scoring drought as he helped Van Gaal’s side take all three point from this game with his goal.

Akinfeev (3): Could not have done much to prevent the goal but was solid generally.

M Fernandes (2.5): Was made to work hard defensively and could not provide his team the width needed at the other end.

A Berezutski (3): Kept the United attack at bay for most of the game and made an important block in the first half.

Ignashevich (3): Was a sound and disciplined performance at the back as he rarely gave Rooney any space to work with.

Schennikov (2.5): Was solid in defense as he broke up play many times but did not add to the attack at the other end.

Wernbloom (2.5): Not too sharp in mid-field as he failed to hold the ball up when in the attack.

Natcho (2.5): Provided no cover for the back four as he was reduced to a mere spectator with the pace at which the home team were playing.

Tosic (2.5): An uninspiring display as he was rarely able to provided any spark in the final third.

Dzagoev (2): Often lost possession of the ball and was not up to the level at which Manchester United were playing.

Milanov (2.5): Provided some stability defensively but was rarely a threat in attack.

Musa (2.5): Showed his pace at times but often found himself outnumbered in dangerous situations.
