After Manchester United’s poor showing against Arsenal, the Red Devils was not only knocked out of the famous English competition, but are set to be punished further for their disciplinary problems as they face an FA fine for having six players disciplined in the game.
Manchester United old boy Danny Welbeck stole the headlines at Old Trafford after he scored the winner to knock United out of the FA cup on Monday night. United not just lost their head in defending to concede cheap goals but also lost their discipline as six United players were booked on the night.
Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young, Marcos Rojo, Di Maria and Adnan Januzaj’s names all entered referee Michael Oliver’s book in their FA Cup quarterfinal loss at Old Trafford. As a result United will be fined 25,000 pounds.
FA rules state that clubs face an automatic fine if six or more players are shown yellow or red cards in the same game and United reached that mark when substitute Januzaj was booked for diving. It will be the first time United have been fined by the FA during Louis van Gaal’s reign for their ill discipline.
Among them Di Maria’s sending off was the stand out one. After the Argentine winger was booked for a dive, he grew in frustration with the decision and pulled the referee which resulted in him getting a second yellow card.
However, Van Gaal did not defend the winger and accepted the decision was the right one. “Angel Di Maria knows that he doesn’t have to touch the referee,” Van Gaal said after the match.
“So that is not so smart of him but to control emotion is not so easy in such a match. I have mentioned it also before the match because I know that these kind of matches a red card is easy.
“He knows that he doesn’t have to touch the referee. He knows that. Every player knows that. I think he’s touched the referee and that’s forbidden in every country, so he has no excuses” he added.
It is to be noted that United have had five players sent off already this season, with Tyler Blackett, Wayne Rooney, Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw all being dismissed earlier in the campaign.
