Wayne Rooney and Phil Jones will not feature for Manchester United on Wednesday, says Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United take on St Etienne in the return leg of their Europa League last-32 tie as they look to defend their 3-0 advantage from the French outfit’s visit to Old Trafford last week.

Jose Mourinho made seven changes to his side for their 2-1 FA Cup win over Blackburn yesterday evening as he continues to juggle league, cup and European commitments.

Rooney and Jones have been on the sidelines with injury since United’s draw with Hull at the beginning of the month and Mourinho admits Wednesday’s tie is likely to come too soon for their return.

He told the Manchester Evening News: “David De Gea was rested. Rooney is injured. Phil Jones is injured. I don’t think they will recover (to play Saint-Etienne).

“Antonio Valencia was rested but Rooney and Jones haven’t trained with the team yet so I don’t think they will be there for Wednesday.”

Mourinho will turn his focus to the EFL Cup final after St Etienne, when they play Southampton at Wembley on Sunday.

But the Portuguese boss is unsure if Rooney will be fit for their trip to the capital.

Asked whether Rooney will be available Mourinho replied: “I don’t know.”
