Manchester United named richest British football club in Forbes list of richest sporting teams

Football as a sport has become richer and richer over the year and has seen a meteoric rise in the value of clubs over the last decade.

This was stressed once again after the official Forbes magazine’s list of the world’s 50 most valuable sports teams was released earlier this week.

This list was first started in 2011 and this year is the first time this list is not topped by a football club. Manchester United topped the list in its first year while Real Madrid were undisputed number 1s in the last three years.

But this year, Texas-based American football club Dallas Cowboys topped the list with a net worth of $4bn (£3.04bn). Real Madrid and Barcelona occupied the next two spots with $3.65bn (£2.78bn) $3.55bn (£2.7bn) respectively, maintaining the domination of the football clubs at the top of the list.

Manchester United are the highest ranked English football club with an estimated net worth of $3.32billion (£2.53bn). They are ranked fifth in the list after the New York Yankees, a baseball franchise in the 4th spot. The Yankees are estimated to be worth $3.4bn (£2.59bn).

The Old Trafford outfit is the only Premier League club in the top-20. Arsenal are the second richest Premier League club ranked at 23rd. They are valued at $2.02 billion (£1.54 billion) and have risen 13 places from the previous year.

Chelsea was the only club from England to have dropped in the list. They fell 5 places to the 36th place and are estimated to be worth $1.61billion (£1.23billion)

Merseyside outfit Liverpool moved into the top-50 for the first time since the list was started. They are valued at $1.55bn (£1.18bn), while Manchester City moved one place to gain the 28th place in the list. The Etihad outfit’s net worth is estimated at $1.92billion (£1.46bn).

The only other football outfit in the list was Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich who claimed the 12th spot in the list.

27 of the 32 NFL teams made the top-50 while 8 NBA franchises found a place in the top-50. 8 football clubs made the cut while 5 of them were from the Premier League.
