Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United made the trip to the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon to face off against Sunderland in the league. The Red Devils were struggling for consistency and were looking to pick up a win in the match to keep the hopes for a top-four finish still alive. It did not go work out as per plan with the home side going ahead early, with Wahbi Khazri’s strike beating David de Gea. Despite that, the Dutchman’s side pulled one back just before the half-time break. Anthony Martial scored to make it 1-1 in the 39th minute, as both sides went into the break.

Both sides tried their best to push for a winner and De Gea kept his side in the game with some good saves. However, it was bad luck that the Black Cats got the second goal when Lamine Kone’s powerful header bounced off the Spaniard and went in on the 83rd minute of the game. The match eventually ended 2-1, with the Black Cats taking home all three points.

Here are how the United players performed in this defeat:

David de Gea: 2.5/5
Made some really good saves in the game, though unfortunate that the ball bounced off of him into the back of the net which
game Sunderland the win.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson: 3/5
Looked good at the back and also pushing forward on the left wing and did his job well.

Chris Smalling: 2.5/5
A threat in the air and did attack some good balls to make a slight difference to his side.

Matteo Darmian: 2.5/5
Not the best day, as he had to go off with a dislocated shoulder which would mean more bad news for Van Gaal.

Juan Mata: 3/5
Though the Spaniard had some good space to make runs into at times, he could barely take a good shot or two and did not really
test Mannone enough.

Michael Carrick: 2.5/5
Did not pass the ball around quickly and accurately all the time and was poor in possession as well at times.

Morgan Schneiderlin: 2.5/5
Failed to do his job of breaking down the opposition attacks and looked weak at times in the game.

Jesse Lingard: 2.5/5
No real impact on the game for nearly an hour, as he tried to create something from the wings.

Daley Blind: 2.5/5
Though the Dutchman made a good block, he was caught out of position at times and struggled to stop the opposition attackers.

Wayne Rooney: 3/5
Though the skipper made some good positive passing movement for his side’s attack, he could not really make a huge impact on the game.

Anthony Martial: 3.5/5
Caused quite a few problems for the opposition defence and scored the only goal for his team with a good strike towards the end
of the first half.

Donald Love: 2.5/5
Brought on at right-back but could not really make a huge impact on the game.

Will Keane: 2.5/5
Came late on, but could not make a major impact in the match.

Memphis Depay: 2.5/5
Though he made some good runs on the left, he was not really effective in the game.
