Villarreal defender Pau Torres is back on the radar of Manchester United, who further want to bolster their defense by adding him to the ranks. The Red Devils already have the likes of Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez at their disposal, but still want to snap up the Spain international. According to La Razon, United are ready to launch an offer for Torres next summer, when he enters the final year of hi contract.
The Red Devils are chasing Torres since last couple of summer transfer windows, but Villarreal were successful every time to fend off the interest. As a result, United acquired Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane last summer, and Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez this term to fulfill their defensive needs. However, their new boss Erik ten Hag has asked the club to revive the interest in Torres as he eyes to build a solid squad depth.
Manchester United looking to clear surplus players in Maguire, Lindelof to bring in Torres
A deal for Pau Torres has been pursued by United earlier as well, they might need him more than ever next summer. The club’s very own center-backs, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof face uncertain future at the club as they apparently seem to be devoid from Ten Hag’s plans. While despite being the captain, Maguire has started only 3 of United’s 8 fixtures this season, where has Lindelof has been used only once.
Both are considered surplus to the club’s requirements, and the constant poor displays of Maguire have further forced Ten Hag to keep the £80 million player away from his system. United are planning to cash-in on the center-back duo next summer who still have a minimum of two years left on their current deals. Ten Hag then wants the club to go all out and acquire Torres from Villarreal, who aptly suits his playing system.
The La Liga side has demanded the 25-year-old’s release clause of £58 million to be paid in full if he is to be prized away from the club. However, with only 12 months remaining on his contract next summer Villarreal could look to sell him for a lower fee to avoid losing him for free in the summer of 2024. The defender too hasn’t expressed any desire of penning a new, long term contract at the club as he wants to leave for a big club.
Torres has garnered interest from not only Manchester United, but also their neighbours Manchester City, along with Chelsea. Xavi’s Barcelona are also keen on the defender, and also enquired for his availability this summer. United will have to move quickly if they are to win the race to sign their prime target. Moreover, they will have to ensure Champions League football returns to Old Trafford next season if they are lure Torres.
A product of the club’s academy, the center-back has been impressing for the Yellow Submarine since making his senior debut in 2019. He has so far racked up 142 appearances for the club, netting 11 goals and helping them lift the Europa League trophy in the 20/21 season. It was then only when Torres caught the attention of United, as Villarreal toppled the Red Devils in the final on penalties.
