Manchester United unwilling to offer Wayne Rooney new contract for at least 18 months

According to reports in The Sun, Manchester United star Wayne Rooney will not be offered any contracts for at least  18 months.

The England international is reportedly keen  to end his playing career at Old Trafford but the United chiefs are unwilling to offer him an improved contract and want Rooney to prove his worth to the club for the deal. Rooney is  currently earning in excess of £300,000 per week and his current deal is set to expire in 2019.

Rooney, who has been criticised in the past for his fitness, has once again come under fire after a below par performance against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday saw him substituted before the hour mark. With the striker keen to impress new manager Jose Mourinho former England and Manchester United defender Paul Parker branding him ‘over-weight and slow’ will be a big blow.

“Rooney is ready to end his playing days at United,’ a club insider told the Sun.

“He is presently contracted until the summer of 2019, but nothing is in the pipeline. It will be at least another 16 to 18 months or so before they even make a further look on an extension on that.”

The England captain who came to the club in 2004, signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract in February 2014.
