After registering the first win of 2016 by beating Swansea 2-1 last week, the Red Devils now face Sheffield United in the third tie of the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday. The game kicks off kicks at 17:30 GMT and will be a home fixture for Manchester United. United’s attentions now turn to the Emirates FA Cup and the challenge of lifting the trophy for the first time since 2004. The Reds’ opponents may be in League One but the Blades will doubtless be highly motivated for their first trip to Old Trafford in almost nine years.

Team News

Manchester United: Jesse Lingard could be in line for a return from the hamstring injury he picked up against Bournemouth in December. Phil Jones and Ashley Young were substituted during the match against Swansea; the former sustained a recurrence of his recent ankle injury and the latter felt some stiffness after four consecutive 90-minute outings. Marcos Rojo, Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw are all still sidelined.

Shieffield United:  Midfielder Matt Done will be hopeful of a return after missing the defeat to Peterborough through injury. But it remains to be seen whether manager Nigel Adkins will rotate his squad, with his side in play-off contention and facing a key trip to fifth-placed Wigan Athletic three days after visiting Old Trafford.

Expected Line ups

Manchester United: De Gea, Darmian, McNair, Smalling, Blind, Schneiderlin, Carrick, Pereira, Lingard, Martial, Rooney.

Sheffield United: Long; Brayford, Edgar, Collins, McEveley; Coutts, Basham, Hammond, Woolford; Sammon, Sharp

Key Battles

Rooney vs Edgar

Edgar is labeled as a player who rises to the occasion against top competition, stabilizes the defence, and also has the ability to stretch opposing teams’ defences, whereas Rooney stands as one of the best strikers in England. The clash between the two will be a pleasure to the eyes as Wazza will lead the attack and Edgar will come forward as the best defender from Sheffield United.

Sharp vs Smalling

Sharp is the best and strongest player of the Blades as the 29 year old face will battle it out against Man United’s Maldini-esque defender- Chris Smalling. Smalling has been United’s most consistent defender this season and has provided maximum defensive contribution. Sharp will have to battle down the obstacles which will come in his way to reach the woodwork when Smalling marks him.
