MLS on the rise – The favourite destination of ageing stars like Lampard, Gerrard and Pirlo
Major League Soccer is the professional soccer league of both United States and Canada. The league is constituted of 20 teams, 17 from United States and 3 from Canada. The MLS season starts in March and runs up to October. MLS was founded in 1993 as part of the United States’ successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup 1994.
It is not so popular in United States like Major League Baseball or National Basketball Association, but with its popularity throughout the world, football is gaining popularity day by day in USA. Some legends of the game will be playing in MLS next season like Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, David Villa and Kaka. Few other players like Ronaldinho, Andrea Pirlo, Didier Drogba etc are also rumoured to be moving to United States. America has seen some football greats earlier also to play in their division with the likes of Pele and Franz Beckenbauer featuring for New York Cosmos. Football’s chocolate boy David Beckham joined Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007 and stayed there until 2012. But MLS neither became popular in America like NBA or MLB nor throughout the world.
Lets have a look at some stars who will feature in the next season of MLS.
On 30th June 2014, Kaká had his Milan contract terminated through mutual consent despite having a year remaining, by activating a release clause as a result of the team not qualifying for European competitions. He joined future Major League Soccer franchise Orlando City as their first Designated Player. He will feature in next edition of MLS after spending most of the last season at Sao Paulo on loan.
On 24th July 2014, MLS side New York City signed chelsea legend Frank Lampard who was a free agent then. He spent the last season on loan at Manchester City and will feature this season at MLS also.
On 7 January 2015, MLS champions Los Angeles Galaxy signed former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard on a pre-contract deal beginning from 1st July,2015. He will feature for the American giants this season also.
David Villa will also feature in the next edition of MLS. He joined New York City in 2014 and spent most of the last season on loan at Melbourne City following the club’s association with Manchester City. The world Cup winner, 2 times Euro Cup winner and all time top scorer of Spain will feature in the next edition of MLS.
According to rumours, players like Andrea Pirlo, Didier Drogba, Ronaldinho are also interested in joining MLS.
Popular faces like Robbie Keane, Clint Dempsey already feature at MLS. Arrival of such great players together will surely raise the charm of the league and will increase competition also. People thought earlier that big players move to USA at the last phase of their career to live a relaxed life and to play football with less pressure. But with so many big players playing together, the standard of MLS will surely move upward.
