Jose Mourinho still believes Chelsea can overcome their underdog status to win the Champions League this season defeating Porto 2-0 which sealed their top spot in Group G.
Chelsea are right now struggling domestically but responded quite well to an eighth Premier League defeat of this season to Bournemouth with an impressive Champions League win which confirmed their place in the knock out stages.
“A team struggling so much like we are is not obviously a candidate to win the Champions League,” admitted Mourinho, who is two times winner of the elite competition as a manager.
“But when we won at Porto in 2004, we were not candidates. When we won at Inter (Milan) in 2010, we were not candidates. When we were candidates, we lost two semi-finals with Real Madrid, we lost two semi-finals with Chelsea, so let’s see. You never know.”
Chelsea can battle with Paris Saint-Germain, for a third consecutive season.
“I think everybody wants to play us,” Mourinho looks quite confident.
“They don’t want to play Barcelona, they don’t want to play Real Madrid, they don’t want to play Atletico (Madrid), they don’t want to play Bayern (Munich).
“Every team finishing second want to get us, they want to get Zenit.”
However, Mourinho have to overturn his squad’s frustrating domestic run to make sure he is still in charge of the Blues when Champions League resumes in February next year.
The Portuguese manager is also adamant that Chelsea can still make it to the Premier League top four, despite being 14 points behind after 15 matches.
The Blues could go down to the bottom three by the time they next face Leicester on Monday.
“While mathematically it’s still possible, let’s fight every game for every point and see if it’s possible to finish fourth,” Mourinho remains optimistic.
A Defeat to his former club Porto would have seen the Blues drop into the Europa League and that might have cost Mourinho his job at Stamford Bridge. On October 5, he received the first managerial vote of confidence of Roman Abramovich’s 12-year ownership.
However last night Chelsea was really lucky when Iker Casillas denied Diego Costa’s shot and the ball bounced of the surface infront of Ivan Marcano. Mourinho thinks Costa should have netted against the Portuguese champions. Chelsea could have scored more if Costa didn’t miss.
“He could have scored two or three goals today. His lack of confidence? Yes, clearly. But his attitude was very good and his movement was much better.” Mourinho was not at all happy with Costa’s confidence level.
“The first goal was an own goal but his movement is great, the pass arrives. Last season, he would score immediately. This season, he couldn’t.
“In the second half, he faced the keeper on his own. You could immediately feel the lack of confidence because the first thing he does is not to look at the goal.
“The first thing he does is to look to the linesman. And when he looks to the linesman, he loses one important second or fraction and then his last touch on the ball is not the best touch.” He pointed out the weakness Costa has to overcome.
