Sunderland’s injury problems have worsened with the news Adnan Januzaj has been ruled out for a minimum of six weeks.
The on-loan Manchester United winger injured an ankle in Saturday’s 3-2 Premier League loss to Crystal Palace at the Stadium of Light.
The 21-year-old underwent a scan yesterday, with the results confirming he suffered ligament damage and now faces a spell on the sidelines.
In order to assess the extent of the injury sustained on Saturday, the 21-year-old underwent a scan on Tuesday, with the results confirming he suffered ankle ligament damage. Januzaj will now be out until November.
A Sunderland statement read: “[Januzaj] suffered ankle ligament damage and now faces an unfortunate spell on the sidelines. He will now focus on returning to action as soon as possible.”
Januzaj arrived at the Black Cats on a season-long loan last month but has failed to impress in his seven games – scoring in just their EFL Cup win over League One team, Shrewsbury.
The Belgian worked under new Black Cats boss David Moyes when he was in charge at Old Trafford and it was believed the 21-year-old felt ‘humiliated’ by United boss Mourinho.
It is also claimed the Belgian was even annoyed being sent out on loan rather than sold permanently to Sunderland with Januzaj preferring a move to Serie A or La Liga.
The Belgium international joins long-term absentees Vito Mannone, Sebastian Larsson and Fabio Borini in the treatment room.
Goalkeeper Mannone injured an elbow in training and forward Borini damaged a groin taking a free-kick, while knee trouble has sidelined midfielder Larsson.
Sunderland, who escaped relegation last season under Sam Allardyce, are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table with one point from a possible 18; they host West Brom on Saturday.
