Revealed: Mourinho Wanted To Axe Four United players This Summer But Was Forced To Change Decision

It’s pretty obvious that Jose Mourinho wasn’t impressed with the squad he inherited from Louis van Gaal at Manchester United.

The Portuguese boss wasted no time in splashing the cash in his first transfer window with £150 million worth of talent coming through the door at Old Trafford.

One of those was former United youth player, Paul Pogba, who commanded a world-record £89 million transfer fee.

However, it seemed the former Chelsea boss was more concentrating on spending his money, rather than earning it. That’s because not a single ‘senior’ player left the club in the summer.

It’s taken just a few months to realise that Mourinho clearly doesn’t fancy some United players. Bastian Schweinsteiger is obviously one of those with the German being banished from first-team training before his recent return.

And, according to Oliver Kay – chief football correspondent for The Times – Mourinho wanted to get rid of the former Bayern Munich hero at the start of pre-season.

While that revelation doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, Kay also claimed that Schweinsteiger was just one of four players that Mourinho wanted to offload when he first arrived.

During a webchat on The Times’ website, when asked about Schweinsteiger’s situation at the club, Kay revealed that Mourinho had planned to also get rid of Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Juan Mata this summer.

“Mourinho didn’t fancy him and wanted him offloaded in the summer,” Kay said of Schweinsteiger.

“Interestingly, he also wanted Blind, Rojo and Mata moved on at the start of pre-season training, but he ended up being won over – no easy feat, where Mourinho is concerned (even if Rojo survived pretty much by default).”

As Kay mentions, some players have won over Mourinho since the start of the season – most notably Blind and Mata.

Blind has filled in in defence and impressed after injuries to the likes of Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly.

But it’s Mata who has been the biggest surprise. Mourinho sold the Spaniard whilst at Chelsea and it was believed he would do the same as soon as he arrived at United. However, Mata has become one of the club’s most important players and has been in fantastic form in recent weeks.

While the futures of Blind and Mata now look more assured, don’t be surprised to see Mourinho offload a few players in the upcoming transfer window.

Mourinho has given very few first-team opportunities to the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Anthony Martial and Marouane Felliani recently and they could be used to raise some more transfer funds.
