Newcastle United have gone from a relegation threatened side to a top-four contender under their new manager Eddie Howe who was appointed mid-way through the last season. Howe picked a Newcastle team which was fighting relegation in November last year, and steered them to a 11th place finish in the Premier League by the end of the 38 rounds. As a result, he has been handed with a significant war-chest in back-to-back transfer windows, further assembling a team which is now fighting for European football this season.
The Magpies, under their new Saudi owners became the richest club in the world and now want to reward Howe with another big-name signing. Newcastle have identified Inter striker Lautaro Martinez as their next priority to lead their frontline. The Argentine, who has scored 21 goals in 40 caps fir his national team, has caught the eye of many of Europe’s top clubs after his stellar stint at Inter so far, and is thus wanted by the interested parties.
Newcastle United join a host of clubs in the striker’s pursuit
The ‘sky is the limit’ for Newcastle United, as claimed by their new technical director Dan Ashworth who has facilitated a string of signings at the club. He now wants to add Martinez to the ranks, no matter what and has a plan as well to topple the potential suitors. Barcelona, Bayern Munich, PSG, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United are all said to be heavily interested in signing the Argentina international, and are now joined by the Magpies.
Newcastle have forked out over £200 million on transfers since the last season’s winter transfer market, post the change of ownership and Saudi take over. Moreover, the club hasn’t shied away from poaching the big names as they have acquired Bruno Guimaraes, Isak and Sven Botman since January who were wanted by some of the elite European clubs. They now plan to entice Martinez as well, with Inter Live claiming the Magpies are ready to straight away double the 25-year-old salary to bring him to St. James’ Park.
Martinez is currently on a £6 million pay-roll per year at Inter, and Newcastle are willing to table a contract with a salary double the aforementioned figures in front of the striker. The forward however penned a new deal at San Siro only last year, which will keep him at the club till the summer of 2026. Further on, the player himself has revealed his plans of staying at Inter for as long as possible, thus becoming a legend at the club.
Inter had acquired his services from Argentine outfit Racing Club in the summer of 2018, for £23 million. The striker has since wrecked havoc for the Italian side against the opponents, scoring a stunning 81 goals in 197 appearances for the club. He also fired them to their first Scudetto since 2010 in the 2020/21 season, racking up 17 goals and 10 assists in 37 Serie A games. He has continued his exploits this season as well, netting 6 goals and providing 2 assists in 11 league games so far.
On the other hand, Newcastle United’s need for a new striker is being questioned given they just splashed £63 million on the acquisition of Isak from Real Sociedad this summer. However, the club hierarchy feels their investment has backfired since the Swede has only managed 3 games so far scoring 2 goals for Magpies. He then suffered a hamstring injury last month, which is slated to keep him out until December. With the club feeling the youngster is prone to picking frequent injuries, given he did so at previous clubs Sociedad and Borussia Dortmund, they are plotting a move for Martinez who seems a complete opposite figure.
