Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi. The German have been long speculated to join the Gunners post Euro 2016 campaign.
Injuries to Arsenal’s top central defenders Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista meant the club had to search entire Europe to find a top quality defender. However, Wenger who made Mustafi as his primary target has secured his player and will look to challenge for the trophy after heavy spending.
Arsene Wenger was heavily criticized for not splashing money while rival clubs are signing key players. But the Frenchman has signed the duo of Lucas Perez and Shkodran Mustafi which have strengthened the Arsenal’s attack and defense as both the deals are confirmed today.
The 24-year old German defender who is currently on international break has confirmed that it was the interest from manager Wenger which has lured him back to England.
‘It was the interest from Wenger,’ said Mustafi, when asked what convinced him to move to the Emirates.
‘When a club comes in and shows interest like Arsenal it makes you feel special. When I heard of the interest and saw people trying to get me here – and the situation wasn’t easy – it gives me the feeling that you are really wanted.
‘I’m happy. I know it took some time but finally i’m here and i’m happy to have made a step forward in my career. I hope I’m going to have a great time here.’
The player was brought up from Everton academy before moving to Serie A and finally to Valencia over the course of his career. With the completion of a move to Arsenal, the player is expected to deliver great performances as he is playing with a big club at the highest level.
Arsène Wenger said: “He is at the right age. He has good experience. He is a very focused player who can play with the ball as well. We have taken a great player but have prepared well for the future.”
