England U21s manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed Raheem Sterling won’t feature for England U21s at Euro 2015. Earlier, Tottenham in form striker Harry Kane was confirmed to be included in the England U21s side at Euro 2015, but Sterling who has established himself as a regular starter for the England senior team won’t be featuring at Euro 2015.
“There is a bit of it being about what is right for the development of the player, whether we think it is an experience that will benefit them,” Southgate said, explaining the situation.
“Then there is whether there is a connection with the rest of the group, what the dynamic of the team is, it depends on whether we see them at first-team level.
“An example would be Raheem Sterling who we now feel is an established international and other countries have similar situations like that.”
Sterling has already scored 10 goals this season, and also found the back of the net against Lithuania on Friday. The 20-year-old was also awarded the MOTM for his performance against Lithuania. Sterling has won 14 caps for England till now and Southgate believes he should be considered as one of the best youngsters in Europe.
“Germany have [Julian] Draxler for example who could play, but will now be with their seniors for certain.
“In France, [Paul] Pogba is eligible at that age group, but he’s moved through that, every country has similar scenarios with their very top players and we’ll make a judgement call on each of those.
“Realistically, Raheem has become a very important player for the senior team and for Liverpool.
“There is a huge demand on him. Part of my role is looking at the development of individuals and I’m not convinced another tournament in the summer would be right for him.”
Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling is fit to face top 4 rivals Arsenal after he was allowed to return to Melwood following England’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania on Friday. It was earlier reported Sterling had a toe injury, despite that Roy Hodgson started him against Lithuania. The 20-year-old scored his first goal and assisted another for the national side as they beat Lithuania 4-0.
