Paris/Manchester, Oct 22 (IANS) Real Madrid were impressive in a 0-0 draw with Paris Saint-Germain here, while Sevilla paid for their reckless abandon against hosts Manchester City with a 1-2 loss in the European Champions League group stage competition. Sevilla on Wednesday showed spirit and skill in the away match with City and the visitors’ hard work paid off in the 30th minute with a goal by Yevhen Konoplyanka at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, Efe reported. The advantage endured for all of six minutes before Sevilla’s Adil Rami put the ball into his own net. Anxious for victory against a City side that was without the injured midfielder David Silva and forward Sergio Aguero, the Spanish football club began taking dangerous chances in the second half, opening the door for the stoppage-time counterattack that led to Kevin de Bruyne’s winning goal for the hosts. The victory leaves City second in Group D with six points, one behind Juventus, forced to settle Wednesday for a scoreless draw with last-place Borussia Monchengladbach, who have a single point after three matches. Sevilla, with three points, face a must-win match at home against City in two weeks.

The clash in Paris between 10-time champions Real Madrid and PSG, both undefeated in all competitions this season, saw an outstanding defensive performance by the Spanish giants. The two clubs remain atop Group A with seven points each, followed by Malmo, who have three points after beating Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 at home, the Ukrainian side’s third defeat in three matches.

Atletico Madrid moved into the top spot in Group C thanks to their 4-0 bulldozing of Astana and Galatasaray’s surprising 2-1 victory against Benfica in Istanbul. Saul Niguez (23rd minute), Colombian international Jackson Martinez (28th) and liver Torres (63rd) scored while defender Dedechko deflected a cross into the Astana net to make it a 4-0 victory for Atletico. Atletico and Benfica are tied on points at six, but the Spanish club has the better goal differential. Galatasaray sits third with four points while Astana has one point.

In Group B, Wolfsburg beat PSV Eindhoven 2-0 to boost their point total to six, enough to lead the group, while Manchester United and CSKA Moscow are knotted at four points after playing to a 1-1 draw in the Russian capital. Bas Dost and Max Kruse scored in the second half to secure the top spot for the “Wolves”. PSV have three points.
