Several reports have indicated that British record signing Angel Di Maria and Louis Van Gaal were involved in a fall-out at Anfield following the wingers poor second half performance.
Manchester United took huge stride towards securing top four places after they beat their fellow top four competitor and bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield last Sunday.
In between both the Mata strikes, Steven Gerrard receiving a red card for an intentional stamp on Ander Herrera made all the headlines. After an impressive first half performance, the Reds level dropped in the second half albeit playing a ten man Liverpool.
Van Gaal feels one of the reason for the average second half showing was losing cheap balls away. Hence, according to Manchester Evening News, he largely placed the blame on Angel Di Maria, who lost many balls in the half.
After Di Maria served his suspension last week by sitting out against Tottenham Hotpsur, for being sent off in the FA cup quarter finals against Arsenal, the Argentine was not directly included in the squad to face Liverpool.
Instead Juan Mata maintained his position from the Tottenham game as the right winger and the decision payed off as Mata scored both the goals. Hence, Di Maria, who had to settle for a place in the bench came early in second half after a possible knock suffered by Ashley Young.
Despite, Di Maria providing a assist for Mata’s second goal and setting Blind through against Can to win the late penalty, the former Real Madrid star had a torrid evening. The Argentine found himself in great positions, but was unable to pick the right pass.
Notably, when he was through on goal, Di Maria tried to pick Rooney for a tap-in, instead he hit the pass behind the United captain. Van Gaal seemed to have lost his cool over him and was reportedly angry with Di Maria’s performance. Hence, he gave the Argentine a dressing down.
Hence, the speculation about Di Maria moving away in the summer has gained further momentum. PSG is believed to be ready to offer Di Maria a escape route from United. However, it is unclear whether Van Gaal will sell him. United fans have to wait till the summer to find out.
