Revealed: Eight Fastest Players to Reach 40 Premier League Goals

8. Thierry Henry

Arsenal v Aston Villa

Number of games to score 40 Premier League goals: 73

The Arsenal legend made a relatively slow start to life in the English top flight after signing for Arsene Wenger’s Gunners from Juventus in August 1999. Yet, it was not long before he became the league’s best player and one of the finest strikers in the world, as he brought years of success to the red half of North London.

7. Sergio Aguero

Number of games to score 40 Premier League goals: 71

Undoubtedly the best Premier League striker of his generation, Sergio Aguero ended his first season in the top flight by scoring the winning goal in the final minute of the campaign to deliver the title to City ahead of rivals United. He has gone from strength to strength since and remains one of the deadliest strikers in the world.

6. Diego Costa

Southampton v Chelsea - Premier League

Number of games to score 40 Premier League goals: 64

The latest player to join the list (and at some speed), Chelsea’s Diego Costa is often criticised for his on-pitch behaviour but the stats don’t lie. The Brazilian-born frontman has been prolific since joining the Blues and is the league’s current top scorer.

5. Ruud van Nistelrooy

Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy

Number of games to score 40 Premier League goals: 60

The Dutch striker was a goalscoring machine for Manchester United during his five seasons in the top flight, scoring 95 goals in just 150 Premier League appearances. Ruud reached the milestone of 40 goals in just his second season and his run of consecutive scoring games was only broken by Jamie Vardy last year.

4. Fernando Torres

Liverpool v Sunderland - Premier League

Number of games to score 40 Premier League goals: 60

The World Cup winner is tied on 60 top flight games with Ruud van Nistelroo. Torres ranks as one of the best signings Liverpool ever made, while simultaneously being one of the worst that Chelsea ever made. Despite later failing, during his time on Merseyside the Spanish striker was lethal.

3. Kevin Phillips

Kevin Phillips of Sunderland

Number of games to score 40 Premier League goals: 57

With the foreigners making up the majority of the list, it is time to look at the local talent that made scoring Premier League goals a profession. Kevin Phillips netted an amazing 30 goals in his first season in the top flight with Sunderland, earning the European Golden Shoe as a result, before adding 10 more the following season.

2. Andy Cole

Cole Celebrates Goal

Number of games to reach 40 Premier League goals: 45

Joint top of the list is Andy Cole, whose first 40 goals came for Newcastle United, but continued to find the net for Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers and Fulham to become the third highest scorer in Premier League history.

Despite scoring the majority of his goals for the Magpies when the league consisted of 24 teams, the feat is nonetheless remarkable.

1. Alan Shearer

PREMIER LEAGUE

Number of games to reach 40 Premier League goals: 45

Also reaching 40 goals in just 45 games is Alan Shearer. One of England’s greatest ever strikers, the Geordie legend was already a well established top-flight goalscorer for Southampton by the time he signed for Blackburn Rovers at the start of the inaugural Premier League season.

He took just two campaigns to reach the milestone and would go on to become the top flight’s highest scorer after a decade with his boyhood club Newcastle.
