Rumour: Chelsea eyeing former rival striker

The desperation to bring back some dignity shows here. Chelsea are now considering a bid to sign former Manchester United and Arsenal striker Robin van Persie as a shock replacement for troubled Radamel Falcao.

Jose Mourinho’s side have had a disastrous campaign so far, while their current batch of attackers is struggling to score at the moment.

According to Turkish media outlet Fotomac, this could make way to Columbian striker Falcao ending his loan period at Stamford Bridge early, while Chelsea going for van Persie to fill the gap up front to bring more goals.

The 32-year-old Dutch striker hasn’t had the best of times following a move to Turkey in the summer. He has netted four times in seven matches and has four substitute appearances in the Turkish league but failed to score in any of the four Europa League group-stage games. He was also left out of the national team in Netherland’s latest round of international encounters.

Manchester United sold van Persie to Fenerbahce earlier this summer, signing Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven. But life in Turkey didn’t going well for van Persie. Fenerbahce manager Victor Pereira has left the Dutch from his starting eleven quite often and he is struggling to cope up with this kind of decision.

Though there are continuous rumours about van Persie leaving his current club, Fenerbahce manager Vitor Pereira strictly denied there was any problem in his relationship with the Dutch striker.

Spanish giants Barcelona and Eredivisie defending champions PSV also have been linked to a possible January move for Van Persie, reports also arising Brazilian striker Fred is a reported target for Fenerbahce.

But the Turkish club released a statement on Tuesday to clarify all the speculations and insisted van Persie wants to remain with his current club.

The statement read, “Over recent days there were many transfer reports about Robin van Persie in the media,”

“But these are against our player’s motivation. We don’t have any idea for selling him and he wants to stay with us too.

“He is a valuable player of our squad and he is going to play for us.”

Earlier reports claimed going back to Premier League or a stint in Italy, that’s what van Persie has in mind now when the transfer window opens again in January.
