Revealed: The Millions Of Earnings Barcelona Will Say Goodbye To Along With Champions League

Barcelona have dropped down to the Europa League from the Champions League for a second consecutive season. The Catalans will now finish third in their Group C which consists of Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Viktoria Plzen, hence taking them to the second-tier Europa League. Barcelona needed Inter to lose or draw against Plzen, and win their clash against Bayern at home to have some hopes of making it through to the knockouts. However, Inter’s thumping 4-0 win over Plzen earlier meant Barca’s fate was sealed even before they kicked the ball against Bayern.

To make it worse, they further lost 3-0 to Bayern, their sixth consecutive loss against the Bavarians in the competition. Barcelona have missed out on back-to-back qualifications to the knockout rounds in the Champions League for the first time since 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons, when Louis van Gaal was in charge. However, this time it will have some serious financial repercussions as the Catalan club will once again miss out on the lucrative money from Champions League.

Barcelona’s Champions League exit in numbers

Barcelona will have to make do with the Europa League now, having failed to get past the group stage in the Champions League. And it not ends there as the club will have to sustain significant financial losses as well as a result of their elimination. The Champions League prize money would have been of some help to the Camp Nou outfit which has struggled economically in recent times. The club had to trigger several financial levers and sell its assets to bail themselves out of a total economic collapse.

Moreover, Barca went on a spending spree after the levers were executed as they splashed over €100 million on transfers bringing in the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Kounde, alongside four free agents in Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Marcos Alonso and Hector Bellerin. The club placed their bet on winning the La Liga and Champions League, as the prize money would have been enough to recoup a considerable amount of their spendings.

However, the equations have changed now as the Catalans, despite all their spendings and glamorous signings have failed to reach the knockouts of the elite European competition. Barcelona, along with the Champions League have bid adieu to €9.6 million which they could have earned by making it to the Round of 16. Another €10.6 million if they had made it to the quarter-finals, €14 million for semis and €22.4 million if all they had managed to win it. That amounts to a total of a whopping €56.6 million of potential earnings that Barcelona won’t be having access to.

The club would have certainly expected to pocket the reward money by at least reaching the quarter-finals, of not the winners. However, they won’t be getting any of that now as they will hope to make it up for the losses from the Europa League. Barcelona can still help itself by going all the way in the Europa League, which could inject a €16.7 million in their financial books through the prize money. Though it is a massive downgrade on the figure from the Champions League earnings, Barca will have to find solace in it.

However, the club faces bigger questions now after back-to-back Champions League debacles. Xavi needs to quickly regroup his team to bounce back in the league at the weekend for their trip to Valencia, which always has been a challenging one for the Catalans. But are Barcelona, and president Joan Laporta going to take anything less than a La Liga or Europa trophy this season? Is Xavi heading out of the door if he fails to land a trophy? And the biggest of all, is this form of the club going to help them in their mission to bring back Leo Messi next summer?
