shashi / 03 April 2015

It has not been often the case that Liverpool approach a big or a must-win game n last 15 years without Steven Gerrard but this Saturday against Arsenal, Liverpool will be without their captain and talisman.

Gerrard was sent off against Manchester United for a stupid tackle on Ander Herrera and because of that he will miss this and Liverpool’s next 2 fixtures in the Premier League. After the Anfield horror, we take a look back at the top 5 worst and most controversial moments of Gerrard’s career.

5. Red Card in the Mersyside Derby in 1999

A 19-year-old Steven Gerrard came off the bench to influence the game but sadly all he could manage was a waist-level challenge on Kevin Campbell. Gerrard was rightly sent off for a horror tackle. That game was the last time when Everton have beaten Liverpool at Anfield.

4. Penalty shoot-out blunder against Portugal

A lot was expected from the golden generation of English football which had the likes of Steven Gerrard, David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Michael Owen and John Terry but every time it ended in disappointment. Such was the case in 2006 World Cup Quarter Final where England battled Portugal and the result had to be decided in Penalty shoot-out.

Up stepped Steven Gerrard to take the kick. Gerrard is normally so assured for Liverpool while taking his penalties but he glaringly missed his penalty to allow Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. to knock England out of the 2006 World Cup.

3. The infamous SLIP against Chelsea

This moment will haunt Gerrard till the day he lives. His only dream was to win a Premier League medal with Liverpool and he was so close to doing it in the 2013-14 season but Gerrard of all people slipped during the crucial phase of the game against Chelsea to surrender their 1st realistic chance at the title in 24 years.

Gerrard’s slip ended any hopes of Liverpool winning the title as Manchester City pounced on the opportunity to win their 2nd league title in 3 seasons.

2. His decision to quit Liverpool

Steven Gerrard had the choice of finishing his career with Liverpool but instead he has chosen to end his playing days in America with LA Galaxy. The decision has been received with mixed emotions around Anfield with few quarters of the fan’s section feeling betrayed by their skipper.

It has definitely put a dark spot in his leagacy at Liverpool. Fans might see it as his worst moment in a Liverpool shirt but I am sure, this decision must have been equally hard for Gerrard as well.

1. Red Card against Manchester United

Steven Gerrard has been the master of these fixtures over the years. His goals, camera kissing celebrations have lived in the memories of Liverpool fans for last 4-5 seasons but in his last United-Liverpool clash, Gerrard lost his cool and tried just a little extra to influence the game and ended up getting the red card.

Gerrard’s tackle was a mixture of frustration and anger as he was seeing the game from the bench when he was fit to start the game. In his tenure of 16 years at Liverpool, he has never been benched when he is fit. The occasion got the better of Gerrard and he could not resist making the stamp and getting the red card.
