Shocking: Brazil legend confirms he turned down offers from Man United and Liverpool

Brazil legend Rivaldo has revealed that he once rejected some massive offers to join both Liverpool and Manchester United back in his playing days.

The former attacking midfielder, who also used to operate as a second striker, spent five years at Barcelona, picking up the Balon d’Or in 1999 following his outstanding performances that season.

Rivaldo also enjoyed the status of a star in the Brazil national team, having helped his country to the 1998 FIFA World Cup final and winning it on the next try in 2002, starring alongside Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. He won the 1999 Copa America as well.

The 44-year-old Brazilian used to be one of the most sought-after players back in his prime time, and admits he received offers to join English clubs Liverpool and United, as well as another “small” club.

“Yes, I did receive a few offers back then from Liverpool and Manchester [United] when I was playing for Barcelona,”

Rivaldo told Squawka. “There was also another small club that tried.”

When he finally left Barcelona after winning the World Cup, his career surprisingly took a nosedive. He had to spend two unimpressive years at AC Milan, after which he would hop from club to club.

The Brazilian further said that he admired Chelsea and United, probably indirectly saying that he might be cheering for Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho during the upcoming season.

“Teams that I admire in England are Chelsea and Manchester [United].”

With both managers taking over at the respective EPL giants this summer, it’s sure to be an interesting battle, especially given the additions of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola.
