TRANSFER WINDOW IS OFFICIALLY OPEN NOW and it took just 5 minutes to see the first signing of January Transfer Window to take place. Southampton have signed the Dutch Winger Elijero Elia on loan from Werder Bremen till the end of this 2014-15 season. Elia has been likened to Mario Balotelli in the past, due to his off-field antics.

Elia is a gifted player and at times with gifted player comes their attitude and Elia seems to have got that in plenty. To quote one of his incidences, Elia once came to training straight from the night club, (literally) told fans to go fuck themselves, and subsequently he got removed from the squad entirely. Add to that Elia has been out of form with making just 9 appearances for Werder Bremen this season.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has been known to sign and work with players who have a good attitude towards the game. Southampton are flying high in the league and one of the main reason has been talked about is the mazing dressing room spirit which Koeman has built. In all of this signing a player like Elia, who has had a history of disrupting the team’s spirits comes as a surprising signing by someone like Ronald Koeman.

Ronald Koeman on his part has come out and defended Elia. Koeman spoke to BBC and gave the following statement on Elia being likened to Balotelli due to his off-field antics.

“If I had doubts about his private life I wouldn’t sign him,” Koeman said.

“It’s the press and rumours, it’s not true. We need really good players who want to develop themselves and be professional here.”

“He is happy because he was looking for the next step of his career because he has not been playing in Germany,” Koeman told BBC Radio Solent.

“He is a good option for us and it can be very good for both parties.

“I believe in his qualities. He is fast, can play from the left and the right, and can take people on, one against one. He is hungry and that is the most important thing.”

Elia will be eligible to face Manchester United on 11th January 2015. He has been given #22 shirt by Southampton.
