Chelsea had a snapping deadline-day of this summer transfer window as they went on to conclude a number of quick deals in the dying minutes. Thomas Tuchel needed a massive overhaul after majority of his important left earlier in the window. The German, after winning the Champions League within six months of his appointment in 2021 was tasked with challenging for the Premier League title last season.
However, their bid to challenge for the league title fell flat as they finished third, a staggering 18 points behind champions Manchester City. This season, they have had even more inconsistent start with just 2 wins in 5 Premier League outings so far. However, new owner Todd Boehly has heavily invested in the team awarding Tuchel with a number of signings.
Chelsea beef up both ends of the pitch with new reinforcements in defense and attack
Chelsea were put on a backfoot even before the summer window commenced as defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen had decided to leave after their contracts expired at the end of the last season. Both went to Spain, with Rudiger signing for Real Madrid and Christensen for Barcelona. Tuchel quickly demanded ‘three’ defenders to Boehly as they shortlisted a number of targets.
At the end, the Blues did acquire three defenders in Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana. Koulibaly finally left Napoli and joined Chelsea for a fee of £34 million, while it took £60 million to prize away Cucurella from Brighton and a whopping £75 million for Fofana from Leicester City.
The headline signing however was Raheem Sterling who left champions Manchester City to sign for the Londoners. After seven trophy-laden years at City, Sterling changed sides for £48 million, penning a five-year deal with the Blues. Boehly also had plans to strengthen the youth side as Aston Villa’s 18-year-old midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka arrived for £15 million, ‘keeper Gabriel Slonina [18] from Chicago Fire for £8 million and Inter midfielder Cesare Casadei [19] for £13 million.
Further on, club record signing Romelu Lukaku returned to Inter on season-long loan after a disastrous campaign last season at Stamford Bridge. In the same vein, Timo Werner returned to RB Leipzig on a permanent deal for £18 million after two dull years at Chelsea. The West Londoners replaced him with former Arsenal striker Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang on deadline-day in a deal which saw Marcos Alonso leave for Camp Nou along with £10 million.
