Arsenal defender has earlier spoken of his desire to leave London giants, and now Sunderland are preparing it battle out with rivals Aston Villa for the Frenchman’s signature. The French defender has fallen back in pecking order with first choice right-back Hector Bellerin thriving in the position since coming on to fill the spot when Debuchy was absent due to injury.
Mathieu Debuchy joined Arsenal from Newcastle United in 2014, but since has made only 22 appearances across all competitions. The injury-prone defender is adamant to leave Arsenal for some first team football, and Sunderland are now favourites to sign the 30-year-old, says Daily Mail.
Arsenal wants to sell him, while Sunderland and Aston Villa are preferring for a loan move. However, Debuchy wants to play continuously in high level and make himself in France team for Euro Cup 2016.
Aston Villa boss Remi Garde showed immense interest in signing Debuchy to bolster his leaky defence. Aston Villa are currently 20th in the Premier League table and have conceded 38 goals. But Sunderland, who sits just one place above Aston Villa have conceded 46 goals, the worst in Premier League so far.
However, Sam Allardyce was seen in London on Monday, and it is expected to see Mathieu Debuchy heading to Stadium of light. It is unlikely to see the defender going to Sunderland on permanent basis now, but a possible permanent switch may happen in the summer window.
