At the outset of 2015, Louis Van Gaal led Manchester United is three places better off from last season’s position. Manchester United has performed way better in the current campaign than they were under David Moyes leadership. However as Van Gaal looks to make few additions in rebuilding his squad we can look at the top 5 targets, Manchester United may like to acquire their services at the earliest.
There was a strong speculation doing the round as Roma was knocked out of Champions League from Manchester City, that it will signal the end of road for Kevin Strootman’s journey in Italy. Louis Van Gaal is a strong admirer of the midfielder and believes him to be one of the missing pieces in the squad. A towering presence in the midfield, Kevin Strootman’s last season at Roma fetched him a high 88% of pass completion rate, he won 55 tackles and scored 5 goals too and would be a welcome addition to the current United team. He has recently stated his desire to a move to Spain, but with the Transfer Ban saga brewing at Barcelona and a lack of interest from Real Madrid might result in the Dutch midfielder moving to Old Trafford.
The rock solid World Cup winning central defender has long been linked to a move to Old Trafford. With no dearth of money at Van Gaal’s disposal, his transfer was on the card even last summer. However the transfer never went through, but the dip in fortunes of Dortmund have again rekindled hopes of the defender making the much awaited move. In his last season with the Dortmund, Hummels had an excellent outing with 57 interceptions, 135 clearances, 36 tackles won and had zero defensive errors and his addition will definitely bolster the much needed defensive options at Van Gaals disposal.
With the players at Manchester United getting use to 3-5-2 system of Van Gaal the most pressing need is of a central defender and defensive midfielder. Other than that, with the left side players stacked up the next addition could be on the right wingback position with the Valencia and Rafael largely being attack minded players. Here comes the possibility of landing the talented Irish player Seamus Coleman, the only deterrent here being the breakdown in the relationship between Manchester United and Everton during last year transfer saga of Fellaini and Baines!
With Aston Villa not having a blistering start to the campaign, they might be in danger of losing a prized asset in the form of Captain Ron Vlaar. It is believed the Dutch defender has already checked all the boxes required by Van Gaal during his World Cup stint with Holland. The best about this deal would be the cut price of around 10 million pounds which is not at all high in comparison to a deal for the likes of Mats Hummels, but with Vlaar being the captain of Aston Villa it will take something special from Van Gaal to get the defender in the middle of the campaign.
Okay, this is a bit of fantasy football stuff here! Any Manchester United fan would love the opportunity of looking at Gareth Bale speeding down the left flank and shooting scorching goals at the Theatre of Dreams. His transfer fees would shatter all previous records, some say he will only leave if De Gea heads in other direction, Perez says he will not leave at all. To top that Bale is reportedly happy at Real Madrid, but wasn’t that the case with Ozil, Di Maria, Alonso too? So this is still a long shot and is likely not to happen in January, but with mounting debt and the unpredictable transfer policy of Real Madrid we may well be in for a surprise in the summer of 2015.
