Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta has agreed to sign a contract extension with the club on Tuesday, 6th July. The Spanish midfielder’s existing contract expired after the 2014/15 season concluded and he was in talks with club over a fresh contract. It was speculated that after a fairly poor season at Emirates, he might move out of the club. One or two Spanish clubs were also reportedly interested in the player. But all speculations have been put to halt after Arteta signed a 1 year contract extension.

Arsenal were interested in signing a new midfielder from the beginning of the season. Even though they have an array of quailty attacking midfielders in their squad, they lacked a strong holding or defensive midfielder. Francis Coquelin had joined the side last winter after spending on loan. But the French youngster was the only option in that position.

Arsenal were linked with several top players like Arturo Vidal, Morgan Schneiderlin. While Morgan Schneiderlin himself was interested in a move to Emirates, it is now believed that Manchester United are the front-runners. Also Arturo Vidal transfer specualtion was rejected by both the clubs.

Now that Arteta has re-signed a contract, it will be interesting to see if Arsene Wenger will sign a new player or depend on his old warrior.

The Arsenal fans on Twitter expressed their view regarding the deal
