The UEFA Player of the Year nominees have been revealed for the season 2014/15. 5 players from Juventus, 3 from FC Barcelona and one from Real Madrid feature in this list. Only one player from Premier League has featured in this list of nominees.
Gianluigi Buffon (Italy – Juventus)
The Italian legend kept five successive clean sheets at the start of the 2014/15 season.
He was the Captain of the Juventus side who reached the UEFA Champions League final and, six days later, became the first man to make 50 UEFA European Championship appearances as Italy drew 1-1 with Croatia.
Eden Hazard (Belgium – Chelsea FC)
The Belgian midfielder was Chelsea’s second-top scorer behind Diego Costa with 14 goals as the Blues won their 4th English Premier League title.
He was also voted the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year.
Only Premier League player among the nominees.
Lionel Messi (Argentina – FC Barcelona)
Arguably the best player in the world, Lionel Messi broke Telmo Zarra’s record of 251 Liga goals with a hat-trick against Sevilla on 22 November.
He netted 58 goals in all competitions in Barca’s treble-winning term.
The Argentine scored 10 goals in the UEFA Champions League this season, joint top scorer alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar.
Neymar (Brazil – FC Barcelona)
The Brazilian scored the winning goal in the UEFA Champions League final as Barcelona defeated Juventus 3-1 to complete their treble.
Neymar scored in both the legs of quarter final, semi final against Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
Paul Pogba (France – Juventus)
The French youngster assisted the Old Lady’s decisive equaliser in their UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg away to Real Madrid.
Andrea Pirlo (Italy – Juventus, now New York City FC)
Andrea Pirlo named the best player in Itay for the third year running, Pirlo helped the Turin giants to a Serie A and Coppa Italia double.
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal – Real Madrid CF)
The reigning Ballon d’Or winner was the leading scorer in the Spanish Liga (48 goals) and the joint-top UEFA Champions League marksman.
His goals tally of 61 on all fronts for Real Madrid was a career-best from a season in which he leapfrogged club legend Alfredo Di Stéfano into second place on the club’s all-time list.
Luis Suárez (Uruguay – FC Barcelona)
The Uruguayan attacker scored twice in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg against Manchester City.
Carlos Tévez (Argentina – Juventus, now CA Boca Juniors)
Carlos Tevez scored 20 Serie A goals for Juventus this season. He was one of the key reasons the Old Lady were instrumental in this season.
Arturo Vidal (Chile – Juventus)
The Chilean was an integral part of domestic double winning Juventus side.
