Real Madrid came stuck against Athletic Bilbao as the current champions lost 1-0 to hand Barcelona the chance to go top of the league if the Catalan side manage to win their game on Sunday.

Most defining moment of the match came in the 83rd minute when Gareth Bale tried to repeat the famous moment from 1996 when David Beckham scored an amazing goal from his own half against Wimbeldon.

Bale struck the shot from a similar area only to see his shot fly over the Bilbao goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz but only the end product lacked as the ball struck the goal post and came back in the play.

Gareth Bale has been a subject to sever criticisms lately from the Spanish media for being too selfish on the field. This attempt can also be taken in the same category but Bale has been questioned over the intent of this shot, many are claiming that the Welshman did not mean to hit the ball that sweetly rather he was trying to cross the ball and it almost re-created the famous Beckham goal from 1996.

It remains to be answered if Bale meant it or not but it will surely go down as one of his finest strikes ever. It came so close to replicating the famous moment form 1996 when a 21-year-old David Beckham received the ball and produced a stunning strike from his own half which flew perfectly and ended into the back of the goal.
