Call him cocky, over-confident or master tactician, Louis Van Gaal has a style of his own which does not go well with others on every occasion.
In his recent interview with the media, Van Gaal has managed to rough up number of teams around Europe by naming his primary Summer Transfer Targets boldly in front of the entire world.
Van Gaal and few United players were attending a day-out with some privileged fans at an event organized by the Manchester United foundation. At the event, Van Gaal was asked about United’s key transfer targets and how far the club has gone to sign them.
We all had expected an answer but what followed left everyone stunned and quizzing for more answers. Van Gaal turned back the clock and took out a piece of paper sarcastically reminded everyone of his famour 4 page explanation of his long-ball tactics earlier in the season. Van Gaal started naming his targets for the summer and named their transfer value as well.
Van Gaal in his sarcastic tone named Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels for £36 million, then Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne for £15 million, Gareth Bale from Real Madrid for £120 million, Paul Pogba for £75 million and lastly Porto’s Jackson Martinez for £25 million.
We have not seen any manager be this open about their desired transfer targets ever in the past. Van Gaal has thrown United’s summer dealings wide open by revealing all of its targets to the entire world. One notable omission was PSV’s Memphis Depay who has been tipped to join Manchester United at all cost.
Van Gaal ended his astonishing interview by saying: “Next Year, We shall be the Champions”
One can never be sure about Van Gaal’s tactics, was Van Gaal really naming his targets or he was playing with the media by naming only those players who have been linked with United the most.
If Van Gaal indeed goes out and buys most of his announced targets in the summer, this interview will go down in the history of football as the moment when Van Gaal turned the face of transfer dealings in club football.
