Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has certainly still got it.
The 38-year-old showed off his still burgeoning ability with a classy hat-trick for Montreal Impact last night.
Up against second-placed Eastern Conference side the Philadelphia Union, the Ivorian blasted three cool finishes to help his side to a 5-1 victory.
Drogba’s three goals showcased all the traits that made him so successful at Stamford Bridge.
The first effort saw Drogba make the run that you always want to see strikers go on. After a neat Montreal exchange on the near flank, Drogba sensed an opportunity and ensured that he was in the six-yard box to get on the end of a delightful ball.
The second goal, also in the first half, had Drogba pitch up in the right place at the right time. The Philadelphia goalkeeper managed to parry an initial effort but it fell straight to Drogba, who buried it with his first touch.
The Ivorian then made it 3-0 shortly after the restart with a cool finish. He was slotted in neatly and he made no mistake in stroking the ball into the bottom left corner.
Drogba has now grabbed eight goals in 12 MLS appearances this season, and looks set to keep going for a fair while yet.
The Ivorian striker, who returned last week after missing three games with a thigh injury, quieted any critics who thought his 38-year-old body may be nearing its best-before date for soccer with a dominant effort at both ends of the field.
Chelsea have signed Michy Batshuayi in their most recent attempt to replace the striker, and if he is able to even get close to Drogba’s level with the Blues he could be in for a very successful stint with the club.
