IND vs PAK SAFF Championship 2023: India locked horns against Pakistan in their SAFF Championship opener and began their campaign in style. The Blue Tigers thrashed the neighbours by 4-0 to start the tournament on a stunning note in Bengaluru.
Captain fantastic Sunil Chhetri once again led from the front and scored a stunning hat-trick. The star forward opened the scoring in the 10th minute after a mistake from the Pakistan goalkeeper. Six minutes later, he doubled India’s lead from the spot after India were awarded the spot kick due to a handball.
In the 74th minute, Chhetri was in the thick of the action once again when he was taken down after charging into the box by Mohammad Sufyan. The referee awarded India a penalty and Chhetri converted it to complete his hat-trick. 7 minutes later, Udanta Singh Kumam put the icing on the cake by scoring the fourth and capping off a fine night for India in front of the home crowd.
The first half of the game witnessed an ugly moment when players from both the teams fought with each other. The incident took place when India head coach Igor Stimac provoked the melee by knocking the ball out of Pakistan player’s hands as he prepared to take a throw-in.
It led to a heated exchanges on the pitch between the Pakistan players and the India coach. Indian players soon intervened and it turned into an ugly scuffle. The matter was brought under control soon but Stimac was shown a red card and he had to walk off the pitch. Pakistan’s head coach was also booked as he received a yellow card along with a couple of India and Pakistan players.
