Arsenal have reportedly agreed a £35million fee with Valencia for centre-back Shkodran Mustafi.

The Gunners desperately need defensive covers, with Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista injured, and Laurent Koscielny struggling with a persistent back issue.

Arsene Wenger made Shkodran Mustafi his number one target weeks ago and a deal now seems set to go through.

With the addition of Mustafi and Deportivo striker Lucas Perez, who is believed to be joining Arsenal for £17million, the Gunners’ summer spending is set to go close to the £100million mark.

Check out what the Arsenal boss has to say amid growing speculations of his next summer signing today.

Where are Arsenal standing right now with imminent deals for Shkodran Mustafi and Perez?

“We are working on the deals. Will we sign anyone before the window closes? I’m 99 per cent confident.”

Will there be any more additions before Wednesday’s deadline day evening?

“We have a big squad, we cannot have more players anyway.”

I guess that means it’s all over Gooners..

Arsenal ’99 per cent’ certain to do business

Q) Gunners boss Wenger is closing in on a £50million double deal for Deportivo La Coruna striker Lucas Perez and Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi.

“I’m 99 per cent confident that we will make a signing,” said Wenger. “I’m more optimistic than before but I can’t announce anything yet.

We have some more interesting quotes from the French boss on the transfer market, as he admits he expected an easier challenge than before this summer, but says he got it wrong.

“It was a strange transfer market, I expected it to be easier than ever, it has been more difficult than ever,” he said.

“It looks like it will be frenetic in the last three days, everyone has sat on their money but we know they will all splash out now.”

On Calum Chambers’ future

While asked if bringing in a new defender will affect the future of Calum Chambers at the club, Wenger says

“Future, no,”

“The fact that he could go out on loan somewhere and play, yes.”

He insisted that Chambers would not be sold.

On Champions League Draw

“It is a good test for us to play PSG. Let’s hope we can get a good first result. They have hit headlines in transfer market.”

And what challenge the Gunners expect from Basle?

“I believe it is a mixture of them being the dominant team in Switzerland, they have good coaches, good youth development. Good scouting.”

Arsenal boss hints Joel Campbell might return soon

Next up is a question about Joel Campbell, who joined Sporting Lisbon on loan at the weekend.

“I believe that he has been a victim of the size of the squad. At an age where he needs to play, don’t rule out he comes back.”

Ozil could start against Watford

Mesut Ozil could be seen in the starting line-up tomorrow, as Wenger revealed the Germain is close to full fitness.

“He is not far now. A decision I have to make in the next 24 hours.”

And what about Olivier Giroud?

“A fraction behind physically.”

Wenger: “I’m happy when our supporters are happy”

A few words on the cold war between the boss and the fans which has been threatening to erupt in recent weeks.

“I’m happy when our supporters are happy but my job is to make the right decisions,” he insists.

“I focus first on making sure I make the right decisions.”
