Player ratings: West Brom 2-1 Arsenal: Cazorla and Arteta let the Gunners down

Aakarsh / 22 November 2015

Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal went into the two-week International break at the top of the Barclays Premier League table and travelled to the Hawthorns after the re-start on Saturday. Things started brightly for Arsenal as Giroud converted a free-kick from Ozil, but Tony Pulis’ side came back into the game to take all three points scoring twice in either half. Cazorla had a chance to snatch a point late in the game but fluffed his lines from the spot to the visitors embarrassment.

Here are the player ratings for this game:

West Bromwich Albion:

Myhill (3): Was in command of his area all night long and made some important saves to keep his team in the lead.

Craig Dawson (3.5): Stuck to his task exceptionally well as he rarely gave space to the likes of Gibbs and Monreal.

Jonas Olsson (3): An impressive display at the back as he gave no time and space for the tall French striker.

Jonny Evans (4): Hardly put a foot wrong and commanded the back line with the authority that was given to him when he was given the armband.

Chris Brunt (2.5): Did well against he likes of Alexis Sanchez giving him no space to run behind. Did not offer an awful lot in attacks for the home side.

Darren Fletcher (3.5): One of the major reasons why Arsenal could not hold the ball up, Jacob was exceptional defensively making a tackle after tackle to deny Arsenal a passing move.

C Yacob (3): Made some vital interceptions and provided a solid cover for the back four.

James McClean (3.5): Was excellent and full of running down the flank putting pressure on the Arsenal back four time and time again.

Stephane Sessegnon (3): Was forced to drop deep as Arsenal started to mount the pressure. Was subbed off at half time.

James Morrison (3): Was loose in possession at times keeping his teammates under pressure, but his excellent finish in the first half gave the home team the confidence that they needed.

Salomon Rondon (3): Service to him was not at its best, but Rondon was very good in chasing lost causes and giving Arsenal a scare.

C Gardner (3)

S Berahino (2.5)

R Lambert (2.5)

P Cech (2.5): Could not do much to stop the first goal but should not have let Arteta’s own goal go in.

H Bellerin (2.5): A poor overall effort as he hardly made any contributions at both ends of the field. An underwhelming performance.

L Koscielny (3): Was largely untroubled at the back but should provide a more viable threat in the air in set-pieces.

P Mertesacker (2.5): Not really at fault for either goal but looked uncomfortable every time West Brom were on the attack.

K Gibbs (2.5):  Used in an attacking role but did no justice to his managers idea as he was largely on the periphery of things on the night.

N Monreal (2.5): Was not bad defensively, but his team needed him to provide a lot more width when on the attacks.

Cazorla (2.5): A dreadful effort from the penalty spot when was given a chance to equalize and was also not bright in possession.

M Ozil (3): Brightest Arsenal player on the field as he stuck the wood work once and created a couple of chances. Was also excellent with his set-piece delivery.

F Coquelin (-): Played just 10 minutes before picking up an injury. Was replaced by Mikel Arteta.

O Giroud (3): Opened the scoring with a nicely taken header from Ozil’s free-kick but since then, made hardly any difference to the game.

A Sanchez (3.5): He like Ozil was bright in possession as he twisted and turned his way through opponents to set his team mates up. Was let down many a times by their finishing.

M Arteta (1.5): Dreadful performance in the middle of the park as he gave away the free-kick for the home side’s first goal and also scored the second in the wrong end of the field.

M Flamini (2)

J Campbel (1.5)
