The last game of the first round of the Barclays Premier League took place at the Hawthorns on Monday night as Manchester City took on the hosts WBA. Both teams started with a bit of rigidity in the pre-season but Manchester City started the game on the front foot and pushed the home team with two goals in 16 minutes in the first half.
Yaya Toure scored two sublime goals under 25 minutes as he lifted City to a 2-0. WBA were starved of possession and did not create much in front of the goal before Vincent Kompany headed home a corner from David Silva in the second half. This goal put the game to bed as City started their campaign with a well deserved victory.
In this article, we provide you with the ratings of each player’s performance in the match at the Hawthorns.
West Bromwich Albion:
G Myhill (3.5): Couldn’t do much for any of the goals scored in the game. Made some impressive saves to deny Raheem Sterling his first City goal.
J Lescott (3): Was working hard to keep his former team away from his goal. Was not strong enough to stop them from scoring on critical moments.
J Chester (1): A very bad performance from the right back. He could not keep up with the pace of Raheem Sterling on the flank nor could he track Kolarov’s overlaps and gave his team a hard time all game.
C Dawson (1.5): Was unlucky to have played a role in the first goal but after that, never looked calm with the ball as he often gave away possession at the back.
C Brunt (2): Playing down the left side of the defense, had to support Mc Clean in attack but failed to make any impression when in possession of the ball.
J Mc Clean (3): Played only half the game as he was replaced by Yacob on the break. Gave good support on the left flank in defense.
C. Gardner (2): Played on the right before shifting into the middle of the park. The final ball was more or less disappointing.
D Fletcher (3): Looked to take on the City players but often lost possession at the right time. Showed enough to deserve a spot in the next game.
J Morisson (2.5): Was dominated by Toure and Fernandinho in the centre of the field. Has to improve on keeping the possession of the ball.
S Berahino (3): Looked good whenever he got the ball. Also scored a goal that was called offside.
R Lambert (2): Not a debut to remember as he did not trouble the City defense enough to cause them any problems.
Joe Hart (3): Was never really troubled in front of goal and was confident coming for balls in his area.
A Kolarov (3): Gave ample support to Raheem down the left side but was disappointing with his final ball on occassions.
B Sagna (3.5): A very sound defensive game and gave plenty to think about on the right side of attack for City.
V Kompany (4): Looked solid all day and also helped himself onto the score sheet in the second half.
E Mangala (3): Not a troublesome night as he made some confident clearances for his team when had to.
R Sterling (2.5): Should have scored on his debut for the club. Needs a lot of improvement in front of goal.
D Silva (4.5): Was the best player on the pitch along with Toure. Was magical all evening with his passing in and around the box.
Yaya Toure (4.5): His two goals and innumerable balls into the box gave the club their first victory of the season.
Fernandinho (3): Gave the support needed in defense and also helped in attack when needed. A very important player for the club.
Jesus Navas (2.5): Could have had a better evening but was a constant threat on the flanks with his pace.
W Bony (2): Not very effective even after working hard. Was replaced by Aguero in the second half.
