Newcastle United are expected to announce the signing of English full-back Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid today. The Magpies are chasing former Tottenham Hotspur right-back for a month and finally managed to sign him for a reported fee of £12 million-plus add ons on a 2-year contract and an option to extend it for one more year.

The 31-year-old English international was subject to leave the Spanish giants in the summer but he was impressed with a quick response from the Magpies. Manchester United were also interested in Trippier but the recent resurgence of Diogo Dalot cooled their interest. Trippier is expected to pass his medical on Wednesday and the club is set to make an official announcement later in the evening.

Kieran Trippier left Tottenham Hotspur where he made 114 appearances to join La Liga champions for a reported fee of £20 million in 2019. He was fined a 10-week worldwide football ban after he passed his transfer information to his family and friends to bet on his Atletico Madrid move. Last season, Trippier won his only trophy in Spain when Atletico Madrid won La Liga. Trippier has failed to score any goal in 83 appearances for Atletico Madrid.

Newcastle United, who are now the richest club in the world are struggling in the relegation zone this season. A major squad overhaul is expected in the summer transfer window but management is keen on adding enough quality in January to help them survive this season. The Magpies are also linked with Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Barcelona superstars Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele, and Lille centre-back Sven Botman.

Newcastle United Warned Of Transfer Challenge By Football Pundit Ally McCoist:

Former Rangers star Ally McCoist believes that the club will face a transfer challenge despite their first big signing in form of Kieran Trippier. The Magpies are struggling in the 19th position in the league table with just 1 win from the opening 19 fixtures. But manager Eddie Howe’s side are just 2 points behind the safe zone and 8 points behind 15th placed Everton. Howe can fancy his chances after holding giants Manchester United in a 1-1 draw in their last fixture.

McCoist believes Newcastle United need more signing in attacking positions as two in-form players Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin suffered minor injuries lately. He also pointed out that new potential signings will be worried over playing next season in the Championship.

They need goals. Callum Wilson is out and I don’t know how Allan Saint-Maximin is, he limped off in the draw against [Manchester] United. He’s struggling. “But are you going to go there with the distinct possibility that you’re going to play next year in the Championship?”McCoist told talkSPORT.
