‘His Times Is up’ – Sunil Gavaskar Gives His Verdict On MS Dhoni’s T20 Career

Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar has had his say on MS Dhoni’s T20 future and as per him, Dhoni’s time is up in the shortest format of the game. “Dhoni’s time is up. With due respect, the time has come. India should look beyond. With the greatest of respect to Dhoni, I think he should be going without being pushed out,” Sunil Gavaskar told Aaj Tak on being quizzed if India should look at Dhoni for the next year’s T20 World Cup.

MS Dhoni is currently on a break from the game. He has been out of the national team since World Cup 2019 and was unavailable for the South Africa series. His future will be determined when the selectors will meet to select the T20 squad against Bangladesh next month.

While he could still play ODIs, given two T20 World cups next two years, selectors have already started looking beyond him. Since World Cup 2019, Rishabh has been the sole wicket-keeper in the squad and has kept wickets in every game since the tournament.

He hasn’t been able to carry his Test form into white-ball cricket but is expected to be India’s wicket-keeper at next year’s T20 event.

Indian selectors also have alternatives of Rishabh in form of Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan. Samson has already played for India while Ishan is a part of India A squad on occasions.

Dhoni, who was expected to take a call on his career after World Cup, has not retired yet. There were expectations that he might call it quits last week, especially after the tweet from Virat Kohli, but he is still an active player, though Dhoni isn’t available for selection.

The absence of MS Dhoni is an opportunity for Rishabh to do well and fix his spot in white-ball team as well.

After the third T20I in Bangalore on Sunday, India’s next white-ball assignment will come against Bangladesh. They will host West Indies later in the year.
