India speedster Jasprit Bumrah believes that he doesn’t need to pay attention to what various experts think about his performance as it won’t help the cause. He believes in sticking to his team’s plans and executing them as no. of wickets wouldn’t always justify his efforts.
On the second of the third Test match at Cape Town, Bumrah picked his 7th fifer in Test cricket as he delivered a terrific spell with figures of 23.3-8-42-5. India bundled South Africa out for 210 to take a 13-run lead in the first innings. By the close of play, India scored 57/2 as Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara remained unbeaten.
India never lost a Test match when Bumrah took a fifer
Talking to the media in the post-day press conference, The 28-year old revealed that he didn’t do anything special, neither he was bothered about any criticism as he just stuck to his routine, and results followed.
“Nothing out of ordinary and I wasn’t giving extra attention. I was not really too angry and I was focused on the present and did what I had to,” Bumrah said.
“Some days I would get wickets, some days somebody else will get wickets,” he added.
This was the 7th fifer for Bumrah in Tests but since Nottingham Test, the pacer took only 15 wickets in 5 Tests before this match so there were murmurs in the cricket fraternity if Bumrah lost his mojo. However, Bumrah didn’t pay any attention to them.
“There will be doubters and there will be people praising you and that is something that an individual has to decide. I don’t really pay attention to outside noise as it doesn’t really help. When I bowl, I have it in my control and I try to bring in my perspective towards bowling, try to avoid what’s going on, may be some people might like my bowling and some people might not,” said Bumrah.
Notable that India never lost a Test match when Bumrah took a fifer. In fact, out of 6 fifers previously, only one match was ended in a draw as the fifth day was washed out in Nottingham 2021 otherwise all other five occasions- Johannesburg (2018), Nottingham (2018), Melbourne (2018), North Sound (2019), Kingston (2019), his fifer played a key role in India’s historic wins.
