The BCCI selection committee has named KL Rahul as vice-captain for the Test series in South Africa. Notable that earlier this month Rohit Sharma replaced Ajinkya Rahane for this role but right before departing to South Africa, Rohit Sharma was ruled out due to a hamstring injury.

It has been a roller coaster journey for KL Rahul for the past months in whites. Before the series against England, he wasn’t even among first-choice openers but an injury to Mayank Agarwal gave him an opportunity and Rahul cashed it with both hands.

A knock of 84 in his very first outing in Pataudi Trophy followed by a ‘Player of the Match’ performance at Lord’s got his Test career going. Though in the latter half of the series he didn’t do much those two knocks gave the team management a lot of belief to trust him in overseas conditions. However, he missed out on the home series against New Zealand due to muscle strain.

As far as his record in South Africa is concerned, he wouldn’t want to look back. The Karnataka batsman scored just 30 runs in 4 innings in the 2017-18 South tour. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, his experience will come handy in the rainbow nation.

KL Rahul will be likely to open with his Karnataka teammate Mayank Agarwal as the test series will begin on December 26 at Centurion.
