India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes that MS Dhoni’s finishing ability hasn’t been discussed enough as all the focus remains on his captaincy. Ashwin said that his finishing ability played a big role in his captaincy to make CSK a champion side.

On his Youtube channel, Ashwin spoke about CSK’s strategy in the upcoming mega auction. In his IPL career, MS Dhoni scored 4746 runs with an average of 39.55 and a strike rate of 135.83 which included 23 fifties. And he also Chennai Super Kings to 4 IPL titles.

MS Dhoni has led CSK to 4 IPL titles

Ashwin who played for CSK under his captaincy till 2015, said that Dhoni’s cool and calm approach helped CSK many times to cross the line.

“Today, people are raving about CSK and their success. A lot is being said about Dhoni’s captaincy. However, apart from his captaincy, there is a skill that has taken a back seat over the years, that is not being spoken much about. We always talk about his captaincy, his Midas touch, but his finishing ability with the bat is not spoken about much,” Ashwin spoke on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin further added that Dhoni always calculates the chase well, no matter how tricky the situation arises. Ashwin also recalled some scenarios when CSK had to play do or die games at the end of the league stage and Dhoni would take the team calmly.

“In a situation where 60 is needed off 20 balls, he goes to the middle and smashes a couple of sixes and a couple of boundaries. He brings down the equation to l5 from the last over. We have seen this quite a few times in the past. CSK loses that game, the campaign would stutter.

“I have seen such scenarios. In such games, we have seen Dhoni finishing in the last over, that is an inspiration. That lifts the team morale up. Suddenly from the lower half of the table, CSK would have 10 points from 10 games. That will help transform their campaign,” Ashwin added.

He further pointed out that the finishers are always very important when you are constructing a team.

That’s why these finishers are important, that’s why Mumbai Indians never let go of Kieron Pollard. He has closed so many games for MI. Andre Russell is also another such player,” he added.
