South Africa Kagiso Rabada has been released from the ODI squad ahead of the 3-match series against India to manage his heavy workload in the Test series. The 26-year old has been rested to stay fresh for 2-match test series in New Zealand starting on February 17.

“No replacement will be brought in for him as there is an extended squad in place in the Bio-Secure Environment (BSE), but George Linde has been retained from the Test team as an extra spin-bowling option for the series,” Cricket South Africa released a statement.
Kagiso Rabada was the leading wicket-taker in the Test series against India as South Africa beat the visitors by 2-1 in a 3-match series. Kagiso Rabada bowled 119.1 overs to pick 20 wickets with an average of 19.05.
In absence of him, Marco Jansen might get a chance to make his debut in the 50-over format as well. Jansen made a sensational debut in the Test series as a 21-year old picked 19 wickets in 3-match Test series to script a series win against the no.1 ranked team.
South Africa has had a formidable record against India in ODIs, more so at home. As the visitors could win only one ODI series in South Africa in 5 attempts. However, India’s only series win in the rainbow was registered in the last tour as they won by 5-1 in the 6-match series.
Since Jan 2021, South Africa had a bit of a struggle in this format as they failed to win any ODI series. First, they lost a home series against Pakistan by 1-2 in April, then drew a series against Ireland by 1-1. And right before the T20 World Cup, they lost a 3-match series in Sri Lanka by 1-2. They currently lie at no.9 in ICC Men’s ODI Super League. However, this series against India won’t be a part of the ODI Super League.
