Former India legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar has backed KL Rahul to be more consistent in Test cricket. Gavaskar believes that KL Rahul has been an underachiever so far. With the ability and talent he has, he could be much more consistent in this format. Notable that KL Rahul scored a hundred in the first test at Centurion which helped India to take a 1-0 lead in 3-match series.

Speaking about KL Rahul’s performance, Gavaskar lauded the opening pair’s (KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal) effort and said that the century opening stand was crucial which put India in a commanding position at the end of day-1 and since the proteas kept chasing the game.

Gavaskar heaped praises for Rahul and expects that the Karnataka batter will score tons of runs as he got his mojo back.

“He has always been a very very talented cricketer. Perhaps, he might agree with me that after he made his debut in 2016-17 (2014) and then those two or three years in between, he might have been an underachiever. But now that he has got his mojo back, now that he has got his confidence back, I expect him to rain centuries after centuries because he has got his hunger,” Gavaskar spoke to Star Sports.

With the hundred at Centurion, KL Rahul has scored a hundred in each country he played Test cricket. Earlier in the year, the 29-year old also scored a hundred at Lord’s and played a key role in a famous win for India. Out of his 7 Test hundreds, 5 of them are out of Asia- 2 in England, 1 in Australia, 1 in South Africa.

“Once you got the taste of what a Test century means.. the pleasure of lifting the bat to the crowd or the changing room.. the entire change room applauding you, these are the moments that every cricketer or batsmen savors. Now that he has got the taste of it, we can expect hundreds from KL Rahul’s bat,”  Gavaskar added further.

The second test between India and South Africa will begin on January 3 in Johannesburg as India will be eying for their first series win in South Africa.
