There Was No Need Of Any Public Statement From BCCI President- Sanjay Manjrekar

Former Indian player and popular commentator Sanjay Manjrekar spoke on India’s captaincy issue on Thursday. Manjrekar opined that there was no need of any public statement from BCCI President Sourav Ganguly when it’s selectors’ job to speak on selection issues.

In a pre-departure before the South Africa tour, Virat Kohli spoke at length about his sacking from ODI captaincy. India’s Test captain said that he was told only an hour and a half before BCCI made a public announcement (about ODI captaincy) and he also denied Ganguly’s comments in which the BCCI president said that he personally requested Kohli to reconsider his resignation from T20I captaincy.

In an interview with Times Now, Sanjay Manjrekar said that three different captains in three formats would never be ideal for any team. However, the discussion should have been between the selectors and Virat Kohli. The BCCI President has nothing to do with it.

“Three different captains for three formats is not an ideal scenario but if you are left with no choice and that’s gonna get the best out of the three teams, then so be it. The one very important member of the Indian cricket administration is a guy who doesn’t quite get the attention that he deserves. And that’s the chairman of selectors,” Manjrekar said.

The former Indian player also gave an example of Ricky Ponting’s case. When the Australian captain was removed from the captaincy, the whole matter was explained by the selectors.

“So I don’t know why there should have been a conversation publicly or any statement given by the president of the BCCI when really it is the job of the chairman of the selection committee,” he added further.

“Miscommunications and all the misunderstandings, everything has been happening over the years. It should have been the chairman of the selection committee versus Virat Kohli. That would have been the right way to go about it. That would have been a more professional exterior,” Manjrekar concluded.

Notable that the BCCI officials haven’t made any public statement regarding this matter since Kohli’s press conference. Though the focus will shift to cricket in a couple of days as the first test between India and South Africa will begin on December 26 at Centurion.
